Justin W. Bush PhD
Choosing the right psychologist for your son or daughter is an important decision and you want the right fit. I am passionate about building trust and strong relationships with my patients. I enjoy learning the best ways to help resolve problems and build upon individual strengths. I help patients and their families make lasting change and gains by taking this knowledge and teaming up with others in a supportive and caring role.
Dr. Bush became a psychologist for many reasons. He believes that as a youth, he could have benefited from having an ally to guide him along the rite of passage to adulthood. As a scholar and clinician, Dr. Bush believes that the final frontier for scientific exploration is discovering how the mind works to benefit a person and the greater good of humanity. For these reasons, he became a professional to help children get a jumpstart on learning more about how psychology leads to a more rich and meaningful life.
A graduate of Gonzaga University, Dr. Bush’s earlier work was within both inpatient and outpatient programs of the Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit at Seattle Children's Hospital. He earned his masters and doctoral degrees at the University of Washington. He completed his pre-doctoral internship and post-doctorate residency specializing in collaborative therapy, solution-focused therapy, and brief strategic family therapy. Dr. Bush is fluent in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness for children and teens, and positive parenting strategies. In 2010, he co-founded a private practice and later joined PANW to be a part of an integrated team in the promotion of pediatric holistic care. Dr. Bush practices in our Portland office.
Leo Tolstoy wrote, “Music is the shorthand of emotion,” and it resonates to the core for Dr. Bush. While on his work breaks, exercising, or out and about in the community, Dr. Bush often can be spotted listening to music spanning all eras, styles, and cultures to inspire his heart, mind, and spirit.
Happy Camper/Mountain Lover
Dr. Bush and his family enjoy camping, hiking, hunting for tree burls in the woods, as his grandfather once did, and exploring mountain life and coast culture. They take annual trips to Whistler-Blackcomb, B.C., and anywhere along the Oregon shoreline. Discovering a mountain town diner and having coffee with homemade pie is an especially favorite pastime of his.
Dr. Bush grew up in the Pacific Northwest and is the father of two spirited children. They share in the love and care of their dog and frequently take weekend trips to Thousand Acres dog park. Being a father is humbling on a daily basis. His children serve as a living reminder to be non-judgmental and open to learning as much as possible when he’s helping other families find what works best for them.
Dr. Bush worked on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska; competed in saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, and bull riding in a rodeo competition; studied abroad and traveled to many countries around the world; coached a youth soccer team; and enjoyed riding motorcycles in his youth and early adulthood. Nowadays, he favors strolling around St. Johns, sampling food carts, and going to farmer’s markets for locally made goods. Dr. Bush appreciates being able to collaborate with a variety of caring people at PANW who are genuinely dedicated to promoting the health and wellness of children.
