Coping with Grief and Loss
Losing a loved family member, friend or pet can bring emotional pain for children, as well as adults. Whether through a separation or a death, children of all ages may experience grief. However, the signs and process of grieving are often different in children and vary with age. Like adults, children benefit from opportunities to express their grief in a manner that fits their developmental stage, with loving and patient support from family, friends, and sometimes professionals. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry provides information on the developmental aspects of grief, as well as suggestions for supporting a grieving child or teen.
